Elle les invite à une représentation de "Firekid" alors qu'ils sont toujours à la recherche d'un second micro pour le groupe. Le talent de Tidjân les enthousiasme et ils lui proposent de faire partie de l'aventure KWAN. En acceptant, Tidjân vient grossir les rangs du groupe et ils commencent à s'intéresser aux vraies affaires: faire de la musique ensemble! #

Kwan est un groupe complet fruit de la volonté commune de Mariko, Antti et Pauli Rantasalmi de former un groupe de hip hop scènique en Finlande.
En2000 sort leur permier single Padam (avec encore Aki Hakala à la batterie) qui reste pendant plusieurs semaines classé dans les charts finlandais à la grande joie de Kwan qui lance dans la foulée leur permier album en avril 2001 Dynasty, référence au collectif qu'ils forment avec deux autres groupes finlandais The Rasmus et Killer. Cet album est un succès: disque de platine et 3 autres singles extraits: Microphoneaye, Late et Rock da House.
Juin 2002 sortie de Rain, premier extrait de leur deuxième album The Die Is Cast qui sort lui en octobre 2002. Deuxième album, deuxième succès pour Kwan, The Die Is Cast est également disque de platine.
En 2003 le groupe, en featuring avec Lauri Ylönen (The Rasmus) et Siiri Nordin (Killer) sort Chillin' at the Grotto, écrit par Pauli Rantasalmi et 'hymne' de Dynasty. Puis sortie en single de I Wonder.
En 2004, sortie de leur 3em album Love Beyond This World, dont le premier single Unconditionnal Love est classé numéro un des ventes dès les premières semaines.
Et s'ensuit en 2005 la sortie du 2em single Decadence of the Heart et la récompense aux victoires de la musique finlandaise, Emma Gaala, le meilleur album Pop. Suivi sur les radio des singles Black Lotus et Sharks In The Bloody Waters.
# Les nouveautés sur Love Beyond This World concernent les paroles, le visuel et, évidemment, la musique. Tidjan met l'accent sur les paroles qui sont plus personnelles qu'auparavant. Elles ressemblent plus à des petites histoires et incluent plus des éléments fantaisites. Les paroles ont été écrite d'une manière complètement nouvelle, avec plus d'échanges et de collabaration.
"J'ai dit à Mariko et Tidjan qu'ils ne devraient pas écrire des chansons. Je leur ai dit: 'Écrivez des poèmes ou des contes, n'importe quoi sur votre esprit et permettez à tout cela de couler sur un morceau de papier'. Je ne voulais pas de vers ou n'importe quoi comme ça." Explique Pauli.
Mariko et Tidjan ont donc suivis ces conseils et montré à Pauli leurs écrits. Lorsque le producteur a lu des choses intéressantes, il leur a demandé de poursuivre sur ces idées et leur donnait quelquefois des idées sur comment continuer. C'est lorsque le texte a commencé à prendre la forme d'un poème lyrique que les autres membres ont participés à la suite de l'écriture.
"Ca n'aurait pas été possible si nous ne nous étions pas fiés l'un à l'autre totalement. Nous avons osé donner nos pensées intimes et nos sentiments pour que d'autres puissent les scruter et ensuite dire que «c'est merdique, mais ces deux phrases là sonnent bien». Tuez vos chéris était vraiment un thème pendant l'écriture de cet album." Dit Mariko.
"Nous nous sommes rendus compte que la seule chose qui compte est le résultat." Ajoute Antti.
Musicalement la règle était que tout est permis. Dans les premiers stades les choses se dirigeaient dans la même direction que sur les albums précédents. Le tournant est venu lorsque le travail initial sur 15 chansons avait été accompli.
"Antti et moi avons terminé For You et nous nous sommes rendus compte que nous l'avions. Nous avons mis tout que nous avions fait jusque-là sur le côté dans une chemise séparée et nous avions décidé que nous avions un nouveau point de départ." Dit Pauli.
"Notre enthousiasme s'accroissait à ce moment. Après avoir réalisé environ cinq chansons, nous étions vraiment excités. Je pensais: «je me demande à quoi la prochaine chanson ressemblera, ce sera probablement quelque chose de stupéfiant». J'étais vraiment inspiré et les idées volaient autour de ma tête, mais je n'avais aucune idée de qu'elles idées allaient se concrétiser ensuite." Se souvient Pauli avec enthousiasme.
Le fait que tout était permis signifiait également que lorsqu'Antti a enregistré un solo de guitare influencé par Led Zepplin une nuit pour le dramatique Decadence Of The Heart, il a finalement été inclus dans le mélange final. Auparavant le groupe aurait pu être tenu à l'écart de ce genre de décision, mais puisque chacun l'a trouver bon, le solo a été sauvé.
Bien que l'ambiance est souvent sombre sur l'album, Kwan n'a pas oublié la pop.
"Beaucoup de groupes méprisent la pop, bien que la réalisation d'une chanson de pop avec du style soit une des choses les plus stimulantes. Nous croyions toujours que si une chanson commence à développer un choeur entraînant, nous le mènerons à terme." Dit Pauli.
Faire des paroles et musique ensemble n'était pas le but de Kwan. Le groupe a voulu également faire un effort supplémentaire sur le visuel et le faire d'une façon nouvelle et inspirante. Kwan a engagé un illustrateur doué pour créer une image pour chaque chanson sur l'album. Il était libre pour traduire en image les pensées et les émotions qu'il a entendues dans la musique. Cette nouvelle approche fut également appliquée pour les photos du groupe.
"C'était cool de recevoir quelque chose de frais et travailler avec de nouvelles personnes. D'habitude vous finissez toujours par travailler avec les mêmes photographes et les mêmes créateurs graphiques en Finlande. Ca soutient vraiment bien la musique lorsque les gars ont réellement entendu notre son et sont alors capables de créer un visuel qui correspond parfaitement à la musique." Dit Tidjan.
"Tous avaient vraiment une forte vision de ce qu'ils faisaient et c'est fantastique. Il est magnifique d'avoir un ensemble comme cela, qui se réunit si bien tant musicalement que visuellement." Dit Mariko.
"Quand un album sur lequel j'ai travaillé est prêt, je n'ai pas pour habitude de l'écouter et de le regarder plus que ça. Maintenant c'est différent. Cette cover n'est pas de nous, mais c'est toujours notre album. Nous pouvons maintenant écouter de la musique avec de nouvelles oreilles ensemble avec une cover artistique." Ce nouvel album, au doux nom de Little Notes, et dont est extrait le premier single Diamonds, sort en Finlande le 22 mars 2006. Cependant, c'est peu de temps avant la sortie de cet album que le groupe décide de se séparer d'Amara, DJ du groupe depuis l'origine. Kwan ayant l'intention de s'exporter au-delà des frontières finlandaises, les nombreuses activités d'Amara ne coïncideraient plus avec celles du groupe.
Ainsi, c'est à 6 que Kwan continue son aventure avec son 4em album et des ambitions internationales.
Le nom Kwan viendrait du film Jerry McGuire avec Tom Cruise. Dans le film, "kwan" signifie "argent, respect, communauté et amour", mais c'est également un nom chinois ayant plusieurs significations d'après Kusti.

"Tidjan and Mariko meet for the first time when she was working as a waitress in a restaurant called Saunabaari in Helsinki. Tidjan and DJ Alimo had a gig at this location. After frequent travelling through Europe, together with DJ Alimo, Tidjan was ready for a change. So he went for a casting at the Musical "Firekid" and got a leading role in it strait away. And guess what, Mariko was appearing in the same show! Tidjan played a MC, which comes close to his actual life.
At that time, KWAN was already an issue and Mariko invited Pauli Rantasalmi (TR & co-producer of KWAN) and Antti Erkäkangas (KWAN's guitar player and co-producer of KWAN) to the show. Both immediately saw Tidjan's talent and where very impressed by his performance in the Musical. And, as KWAN was looking for a second MC, beside Mariko, it was clear to ask Tidjan if he would like to join the band. As we all know now, his answer was a clear yes and became a member of KWAN."

# The clearest new things on Kwan's Love beyond this world have to do with lyrics, visuals and, of course, the music.
Tidjan emphasizes that the lyrics are more personal than before. At the same time they're more like stories, and include more fantasy-elements. The lyrics were done in a completely new way, and there was much more collaboration on them than before.
"I told Mariko and Tidjan that they shouldn't write songs. 'Write poems or short stories, whatever's on your mind, and let it all pour onto a piece of paper', I told them. I wasn't looking for rhymes or anything like that" Pauli explains.
Mariko and Tidjan did what they were told to do, and showed Pauli what they'd written. When the producer saw interesting lines, he asked the vocalist to expand on those ideas, and sometimes gave them ideas on how to continue. When the text began to come together as a lyric, other members joined in the writing.
"That wouldn't be possible if we didn't trust each other completely. We dared to give our innermost thoughts and feelings for others to scrutinize, and then say 'this is crap, but these two sentences here sound great'. Kill your darlings was truly a theme during the making of this record" Mariko says.
"We realized that the only thing that matters is the result" Antti adds.
Musically the rule was that everything is allowed. In the early stages things were heading in the same direction as on previous albums. The turning point came when initial work on 15 songs had been completed.
"Antti and I did For You, and realized we had it. We moved everything we'd done until then on the side into a separate folder, and decided we had a new starting point" Pauli says.
"Our enthusiasm was running high at that moment. After we'd completed about five songs, we were really excited. I was thinking: 'I wonder what the next song will be like, it'll probably be something amazing'. I was really inspired and ideas were flying around in my head, but I had no idea what ideas were going to materialize next" Pauli remembers with enthusiasm.
The fact that everything was allowed also meant that when Antti recorded a Led Zeppelin -influenced guitar solo one night for the dramatic Decadence Of The Heart, it was included in the final mix. Earlier the band might have shied away from something like that, but since everyone thought it sounded great the solo was saved.
Even though the moods are often dark on the record, Kwan didn't forget about pop.
"A lot of bands despise pop, even though making a pop song with style is one of the most challenging things. We've always believed that if a song begins to develop a catchy chorus, we'll follow it through" Pauli says.
Getting the lyrics and music together wasn't the end of Kwan's ambitions. The group also wanted to put extra effort on the visuals, and do them in a new and inspiring way. Kwan hired a talented illustrator to create an image for every song on the album. He had free reign to translate the thoughts and emotions he heard in the music into images. A new approach was also taken to band photos.
"It was cool to get something fresh, and to work with new people. Usually you end up working with the same photographers and graphic designers in Finland. It supports the music really well that the guys really got our soundscape, and were able to create visuals that fit the music perfectly" Tidjan says.
"Both of them really had a strong vision of what they were doing, and that's fantastic. It's wonderful to have a package like this, which comes together so well both musically and visually" Mariko adds.
"When an album I've worked on is ready, I'm not usually that interested in listening to it anymore. Now it's different. This cover art isn't by us, but it's still our thing. We can now listen to the music with new ears together with the cover art" Pauli says with enthusiasm.

In December, 2005, the band decided to record the successor of Love Beyond This World in the new Dynasty recordings studio. This new album, called Little Notes, from which is extracted the first single Diamonds, will be released in Finland on March 22nd, 2006. Kwan having intention to be exported beyond Finnish borders, the many Amara's activities would not coincide any more with those of the band.

And, as KWAN was looking for a second MC, beside Mariko, it was clear to ask Tidjan if he would like to join the band. As we all know now, his answer was a clear yes and became a member of KWAN."
Kwan was progressively formed until 2001with the permanent group MC Mariko, MC Tidjan, DJ Amara, Kusti the bassist, Antti the guitarist (and co-producer), Risto the drummer, Tatu the percussionist and Thelmi the cellist. Kwan is a complete band as the result of the common willpower of Mariko, Antti and Pauli Rantasalmi to form a theatrical band of hip hop in Finland.
On 2000 the first single was released Padam (still with Aki Hakala as the drummer) which stay for several weeks on the Finnish charts for the great joy of Kwan who released their first album at the same time in April 2001 Dynasty, referring to the grouping that they forming with two other Finnish band The Rasmus and Killer. This album was a success: record of platinum and three other single extract: Microphoneaye, Late and Rock da House.
In June 2002 was released Rain, first single of there second album The Die Is Cast which was released in Octobre 2002. Second album, second success for Kwan, The Die Is Cast is also record of platinum.
In 2003 the band, featuring Lauri Ylönen (The Rasmus) and Siiri Nordin (Killer) brought out Chillin' at the Grotto, written by Pauli Rantasalmi, and 'hymn' of Dynasty. Then, I Wonder was released as a single.
In 2004, their third album was released Love Beyond This World, the first single Unconditional Love is number one for sale from the first weeks.
The second single is following in 2005 Decadence of the Heart and a prize from the Finnish Grammy Awards Emma Gaala, Best hip hop album. Followed on radio Black Lotus and Sharks In The Bloody Waters singles.
# The clearest new things on Kwan's Love beyond this world have to do with lyrics, visuals and, of course, the music.
Tidjan emphasizes that the lyrics are more personal than before. At the same time they're more like stories, and include more fantasy-elements. The lyrics were done in a completely new way, and there was much more collaboration on them than before.
"I told Mariko and Tidjan that they shouldn't write songs. 'Write poems or short stories, whatever's on your mind, and let it all pour onto a piece of paper', I told them. I wasn't looking for rhymes or anything like that" Pauli explains.
Mariko and Tidjan did what they were told to do, and showed Pauli what they'd written. When the producer saw interesting lines, he asked the vocalist to expand on those ideas, and sometimes gave them ideas on how to continue. When the text began to come together as a lyric, other members joined in the writing.
"That wouldn't be possible if we didn't trust each other completely. We dared to give our innermost thoughts and feelings for others to scrutinize, and then say 'this is crap, but these two sentences here sound great'. Kill your darlings was truly a theme during the making of this record" Mariko says.
"We realized that the only thing that matters is the result" Antti adds.
Musically the rule was that everything is allowed. In the early stages things were heading in the same direction as on previous albums. The turning point came when initial work on 15 songs had been completed.
"Antti and I did For You, and realized we had it. We moved everything we'd done until then on the side into a separate folder, and decided we had a new starting point" Pauli says.
"Our enthusiasm was running high at that moment. After we'd completed about five songs, we were really excited. I was thinking: 'I wonder what the next song will be like, it'll probably be something amazing'. I was really inspired and ideas were flying around in my head, but I had no idea what ideas were going to materialize next" Pauli remembers with enthusiasm.
The fact that everything was allowed also meant that when Antti recorded a Led Zeppelin -influenced guitar solo one night for the dramatic Decadence Of The Heart, it was included in the final mix. Earlier the band might have shied away from something like that, but since everyone thought it sounded great the solo was saved.
Even though the moods are often dark on the record, Kwan didn't forget about pop.
"A lot of bands despise pop, even though making a pop song with style is one of the most challenging things. We've always believed that if a song begins to develop a catchy chorus, we'll follow it through" Pauli says.
Getting the lyrics and music together wasn't the end of Kwan's ambitions. The group also wanted to put extra effort on the visuals, and do them in a new and inspiring way. Kwan hired a talented illustrator to create an image for every song on the album. He had free reign to translate the thoughts and emotions he heard in the music into images. A new approach was also taken to band photos.
"It was cool to get something fresh, and to work with new people. Usually you end up working with the same photographers and graphic designers in Finland. It supports the music really well that the guys really got our soundscape, and were able to create visuals that fit the music perfectly" Tidjan says.
"Both of them really had a strong vision of what they were doing, and that's fantastic. It's wonderful to have a package like this, which comes together so well both musically and visually" Mariko adds.
"When an album I've worked on is ready, I'm not usually that interested in listening to it anymore. Now it's different. This cover art isn't by us, but it's still our thing. We can now listen to the music with new ears together with the cover art" Pauli says with enthusiasm.
Kwan's visuals effectively open the doors into Love Beyond This World's dark and multidimensional landscape, where things aren't always as they seem. When the music's hooks grab you, you can't know for sure what depths you're being dragged into. In December, 2005, the band decided to record the successor of Love Beyond This World in the new Dynasty recordings studio. This new album, called Little Notes, from which is extracted the first single Diamonds, will be released in Finland on March 22nd, 2006. However, it is shortly before Little Notes released the band decided to part from Amara, DJ of the group since the beginning.
Kwan having intention to be exported beyond Finnish borders, the many Amara's activities would not coincide any more with those of the band.
So, it is in 6 members that Kwan continues the adventure with the 4em album and international ambitions.
The name of Kwan would come from the movie Jerry McGuire with Tom Cruise. In this movie, "kwan" means "money, respect, community and love", but it's also a Chinese name with different meanings, according to Kusti.
